San Diego Small Biz Spotlight: Sugar Mamma Caramels

As a San Diego native, it’s my duty to always support small, artisanal businesses with heart-centered roots. I’ve been thinking about the content direction for this blog lately, and I’m hoping to spotlight a small local business at least once a month.

In June, I’d like to take a moment to share more about Sugar Mamma Caramels, based in San Diego. Quick sidebar- I actually performed in several musical theater performances with the owner Nancy’s daughter. When I heard Nancy was the pulse behind this supremely decadent dessert company, I had to learn more and try it myself.

Nancy handcrafts these gourmet caramels straight from her quaint kitchen in Talmadge, San Diego, with no additives or preservatives EVER.  She’s noted in town as the “Partnerships Queen” because she collaborates with neighboring food companies and conceptualizes experimental caramels that will send you to sweet heaven and back. ie) champagne, chili pepper, bourbon, etc.

Sugar Mamma's signature flavor is sea salt. Nancy worked her magic and captured the quintessential sweet/salty balance here with a pronounced finishing bite of the salt. I brought these to a family birthday party-- they were devoured in minutes. Also may I add, none of her caramels are unpleasantly tough. I dread the ones that end up becoming a laborious jaw workout.

I recently tried her small batch coffee caramels actually infused with Parabola coffee. WOW. So smooth, buttery and laced with distinct pops of coffee. Imagine devouring a creamy caramel and immediately following it with a frothy latte. The creaminess of the java combined with the consistency of the caramel is an exquisite thrill for the tastebuds.

Nancy is always crafting homemade baked goods in small batches and announces her newest creations over on her Instagram. But you have to act quickly before she sells out.

Trust me, if you have an unrelenting sweet tooth like me, definitely think twice before you buy from See’s Candy. Support small businesses like Nancy’s. She’s adding more sweetness to the world right from her home and that’s an initiative I’ll always stand behind.
